The Assistant Deputy Director will be responsible for assisting with the management of the Division and overseeing the day-to-day operations and management of the following sections of WMS: Corrosion Engineering, Cross-Connection Control, and Meter Services. Some of the priorities this position will focus on are water system protection, regulatory compliance, water delivery to customers, and effective responsiveness to public, council, and mayoral inquiries.
This is an on-site role that will operate out of our Caminito Chollas and Topaz Way offices.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in any of the equivalent studies such as Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field; AND
- Three (3) years of management experience in water and/or wastewater operations.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Proven experience in fast-paced operations-based settings.
- Demonstrated ability to foster a positive work environment.
- Track record of driving quality and efficiency improvements, monitoring performance, and cultivating an inclusive workplace that values all employees.
- Strong ability to proactively identify challenges and implement creative, viable operational solutions to improve service delivery.
- Proven capability to manage multiple projects effectively, maintain accurate project schedules, and ensure timely completion of milestones.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey complex or technical information to various audiences, including the public.
- Thorough understanding of regulatory requirements for both potable and recycled water, with the ability to collaborate effectively with oversight agencies such as the Division of Drinking Water and the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board.
- An understanding of public entity personnel and labor relations principles, policies, and procedures.
The Department:
The Public Utilities Department provides reliable and sustainable water, wastewater, and stormwater services to San Diego. Focusing on efficiency, innovation, and environmental stewardship, the department ensures high-quality water delivery and effective wastewater and stormwater management. The department operates through the Water Utility Fund, Municipal Wastewater Fund, and Metropolitan Wastewater Fund, serving retail, wholesale, and reclaimed water customers. The department is implementing the Pure Water San Diego project, which uses advanced water purification technology to provide a safe, sustainable, and drought-proof drinking water supply for the City.
