Join our dynamic team as the Assistant Deputy Director – Wastewater Treatment Division, where you will play a pivotal role in managing the day-to-day operations of San Diego's wastewater system. Under the general direction of the Deputy Director, you'll lead a dedicated team of approximately 230 staff across various disciplines, including Wastewater Operations, Administrative and Financial Services, Power Plant Operations, Maintenance, and Wastewater Treatment Engineering. This on-site position requires flexibility and availability during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field; AND
  • Three (3) years of management experience in water and/or wastewater operations.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

 

Desirable Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • A California State Water Resources Control Board Wastewater Operator Certification Grade 5 is highly desirable.
  • 3 years of experience in managing large programs, projects, or field operations
  • Experience understanding and working with a complex budget.
  • Experience balancing competing interests with regulatory agencies (Regional Water Quality Control Board and California Water Resources Control Board) and a political environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to proactively identify and support creative and viable business solutions, resulting in successful interactions with a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Experience enhancing customer service and customer satisfaction through the management of high-performing teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to work effectively with customers, elected officials, external businesses, and governmental agencies.
  • An understanding of public entity personnel and labor relations principles, policies, and procedures.
